Full Description

Recently experimental results became available on the second benchmark problem on simplified methods for elevated temperature design and analysis: the Saclay fluctuating sodium level experiment. These are compared to previously published numerical and analytical results in WRC Bulletin 258, May 1980.

In a recent report we presented the results of the second benchmark problem on simplified methods for elevated temperature design and analysis: the Saclay fluctuating sodium level experiment. This problem was solved by detailed special purpose computer analyses by Chern at the Foster Wheeler Energy Corporation in the U.S. and Goodall et al. at the Central Electricity Generating Board in the U.K. It was solved with simplified methods by O'Donnell and Porowski in the US., by Goodall et al. at the Central Electricity Generating Board in the U.K., and by Casier at Electricite de France.

When these efforts were completed experimental data were not yet available and it was decided to proceed with publication without them. Now the experimental data are available and it is appropriate to present a comparison of the analytical and experimental results. This will be carried out here.

Our discussion begins with a short review of the fluctuating sodium level experiment. This is followed by a summary of the results that were previously obtained by digital computer analyses and by simplified analyses. Then, the experimental results are presented and compared to the analytical results.
