Full Description

The bimetallic materials which are known as nickel and stainless clad steel plates are defined in this report with respect to properties and available sizes, and are also identified by the several applicable ASTM and ASME specifications. The characteristics of each of the metals comprising the clad plates are not altered, but, combined as they are, they require specific understanding and special fabricating techniques to assure successful service life. The special procedures used for cutting to size, preparing edges for welding and fitting prior to welding are described. The importance of these procedures to obtain quality with economy is explained.

Great flexibility is available to the designer and welding engineer when welded joints are considered in nickel and stainless clad steel fabrications. Several joint designs and welding procedures are described in detail. Applicable welding techniques are discussed. The most commonly used designs and procedures are compared with alternate possibilities. The advantages and disadvantages of several methods are reviewed. Some difficulties which are occasionally experienced when welding clad steels are described. Preventive and corrective measures arc prescribed for these difficulties. Inspection, testing and postwelding heat treatment, as these subjects apply to clad steel weldments, are reviewed.
