MACHINE VISION SYSTEMS HAVE TYPICALLY BEEN PROGRAMMED FOR SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS BY ONE OF TWO METHODS; USE OF GENERAL PURPOSE, MENU-DRIVEN INTERFACES OR DEVELOPMENT OF CUSTOM SOFTWARE WRITTEN IN A FORMAL COMPUTER LANGUAGE. BOTH APPROACHES HAVE SOME LIMITATIONS FOR THE USERS OF THESE SYSTEMS. THE DRAMATIC INCREASE IN THE USE AND ACCEPTANCE OF GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACES IN THE PERSONAL COMPUTING WORLD, HOWEVER, HAS PAVED THE WAY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW PROGRAMMING SCHEMES. THIS PAPER EXAMINES ONE SUCH INTERFACE, THE VISION PROGRAM MANAGER, AND DISCUSSES HOW IT ATTEMPTS TO CAPITALIZE ON THE STRENGTHS OF THE TRADITIONAL APPROACHES TO MACHINE VISION PROGRAMMING WHILE AVOIDING THE INHERENT SHORTCOMINGS OF EACH.
