THIS PAPER PRESENTS AND DISCUSSES AN OPERATION- DRIVEN CELL DESIGN METHODOLOGY. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS METHODOLOGY IS TO USE OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AS THE DRIVER OF CELL DESIGN PROCESS, AS OPPOSED TO THE TRADITIONAL THINKING THAT PERFORMANCE OF AN ENGINEERING DESIGN MUST FOLLOW FROM ITS DESIGN. THE METHODOLOGY ENABLES US TO DESIGN A MANUFACTURING CELL BY SEQUENTIALLY CONSIDERING OPERATING STRATEGIES, BATCH SEQUENCING AND SIZING, AND MATERIAL HANDLING MECHANISM. THE METHODOLOGY IS A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH WHICH DRAWS THE STRENGTH OF BOTH SIMULATION AND ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR EFFECTIVE DECISION MAKING AT VARIOUS STEPS OF THE DESIGN PROCESS.
