Full Description

High costs for destructive testing, associated negative quality factors, and high costs to resolve hardening errors have motivated gear manufacturers to improve the effectiveness of their hardness test procedures by implementing nondestructive testing programs supported by only limited destructive testing. Concurrently, testing costs are substantially reduced. The introduction of new multi-frequency test protocols like PMFT have made it possible to implement eddy current testing on mass produced, heat treated components to reliably detect all significant hardening errors caused by mistakes in heat treating processes. Gear manufacturers are exploiting this new technology to improve test effectiveness and to reduce testing costs.
