Full Description

In the last 20 years synthetic diamond has become the most used tool for drilling in the mining and oil industries. This paper focuses on the study of forces and tool wear rate of the polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC) inserts in turning of granite. This process is a common method for testing PDCs for mining. The normal cutting force was predicted based on the wear flats (the stress on the diamond wear flat was 7 to 8 times the stress on the carbide support). A wear model was established based on the slider wear theory. Finally, the effects of tool wear rate were investigated. Largest tool wear was found at a cutting edge temperature of about 400(deg)C.
