Full Description

The use of structural dampers to suppress machine tool chatter and vibration is extremely effective when applied to appropriate applications. Machining is an inherently dynamic process which results in forces acting between the tool and work piece. These forces produce a relative displacement between the tool and workpiece which affects chip thickness and the machined surface geometry. The coupled relationship between the response of the machine structure and the cutting conditions leads to a feedback mechanism and process modulation of vibration (machine tool chatter). The use of structural dampers to suppress machine tool chatter and vibration is extremely effective in overcoming these limitations.
