Full Description

This project investigated the effects of sprue placement, fiber style, and orientation on part quality in pieces made from both single stacked ply's of fiber and an equivalent amount of stitched fiber preform utilizing the resin transfer molding (RTM) process. A series of parts from both fabric choices with identical orientations were fabricated. Each specific orientation set was fabricated using two different sprue locations. For each piece fabricated, with a given fabric style, orientation, and sprue location, the following observations were made: a) overall part quality; b) surface porosity; c) voids; d) distortion; and, e) encapsulation.
