The paper describes several examples of the implementation of optical non-contact sensors in machine tools to provide in-process monitoring of part dimensions and condition of tooling. An intelligent lathe is described, including integrated multiple optical sensors. Results presented include repeatability and accuracy tests from sensors in the machine tool environment, and discussion of the steps taken to overcome the harsh environment of the machine, including packaging of the sensors, and mounting considerations.
