A NEW GENERATION OF METAL CLEANING SOLVENTS IS BEING DEVELOPED AS ALTERNATIVES TO THE OZONE-DEPLETING CHLOROFLUOROCARBON (CFC) SOLVENTS. THE HIGHER COST AND GENERALLY GREATER VOLATILITY OF THE NEW SOLVENTS WILL REQUIRE THAT NEW LOW-VAPOR-EMISSION EQUIPMENT BE DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED FOR THEIR SAFE AND COST-EFFECTIVE EMPLOYMENT. A DETAILED STUDY HAS BEEN MADE OF THE ROLE THAT VARIOUS EQUIPMENT DESIGN FACTORS PLAY IN LIMITING AND CONTROLLING SOLVENT EMISSIONS. THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY ARE PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED, AND GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE DESIGN OF LOW-EMISSION EQUIPMENT ARE OUTLINED.
