THE COST EFFECTIVENESS OF SHORT-RUN CNC SURFACE GRINDING HAS NEVER BEEN REALIZED BECAUSE OF THE EXCESSIVE SETUP TIME REQUIRED FOR EVEN THE SIMPLEST JOB. PRESENTLY ALL SHORT RUN (100 PIECES OR LESS) GRINDING IS DONE BY HAND WITH AN OPERATOR FOLLOWING A CONTOUR (IN THE WHEEL OR WORK PIECE) AND USING SOME KIND OF EQUIPMENT ATTACHED TO THE GRINDER TO MAKE SURE HE OR SHE IS WITHIN THE CORRECT PARAMETERS. THE COST OF CNC GRINDING USUALLY CANNOT BE JUSTIFIED BECAUSE NORMAL CNC SETUP TIME IS TOO HIGH IN RELATION TO OVERALL JOB TIME. THEREFORE, THE MOST CRITICAL JOBS (I.E., DIE PUNCHES AND MODE INSERTS) ARE MADE WITH LABOR-INTENSIVE, TEDIOUS HAND GRINDING OPERATIONS.
