IN THIS PAPER, BOTH THE ARCHITECTURAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL ISSUES IMPEDING PRODUCT ENGINEERING ARE ADDRESSED. THE FOCUS OF THE PAPER IS MACHINED-PART DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE IN A HIGHLY AUTOMATED PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT. A FUNCTIONAL VIEW OF ENGINEERING IS FIRST PROVIDED WITH A PERSPECTIVE OF WHAT A PRODUCT MODEL IS AND HOW IT EVOLVES. THE EMPHASIS OF THIS PAPER IS ON A SCIENCE-BASED APPROACH TO INTEGRATING ENGINEERING ACTIVITIES. DESIGN AND PRODUCTION RELATED COMPONENTS OF ENGINEERING ARE DETAILED. THE INTEGRATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THESE ACTIVITIES AND AN APPROACH TO INTEGRATED ENGINEERING ALSO ARE PRESENTED.
