Full Description

1.1These test methods cover the determination of the content of 5-ethylidenenorbornene (ENB) or Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) in ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) terpolymers. They are applicable to diene contents in the 0.1 to 10 mass % range.

1.2ENB and DCPD are dienes introduced in ethylene/propylene rubbers to generate specific cure properties. Since high precision for diene content determination has become very important, a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopic (FTIR) method was developed. Diene determination was performed in the past by a refractive index technique.

Note 1:The procedures for % ENB and % DCPD differ only in the location in the infrared (IR) of the IR peak being quantified.

1.3The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

1.4This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.5This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
