Description / Abstract: This document specifies principles of cognitive accessibility within the area of daily time management, followed by guidelines for their application in design. This will focus on identifying the critical variables in the design and construction of products (and common exceptions) that affect their usability for people with cognitive impairment. This document provides design recommendations for features and functions known to increase the accessibility of products and systems used to support daily time management for people with cognitive impairment regardless of age. This is done by presenting examples of the needs of people with cognitive impairment and specifically related limitations in daily time management. Each category is presented within a structure with a short presentation of the skill, followed by examples from a person that demonstrates the user’s needs and design recommendations.

The categories are:

a) Perception of time

b) Orientation to time

c) Time management

d) Adapting to time demands

This document will not provide test methods and specific instructions for measuring and reporting on these variables, nor provide relevant product information, about intended use and users, to potential vendors and consumers.
