Full Description

NFPA 36 provides requirements for fire-safe design and operation of solvent extraction plants, facilities that use hydrocarbon solvents to extract oils from agricultural commodities such as oil-bearing seeds.

Provisions address:
The extraction process and facilityStorage and handling of the solvent Operations involved in preparing raw material (meal) for processing Means for conveying the oil and processed solids from the extraction facility Conducting repairs when extraction equipment is operating and when it is shut down and purged of hydrocarbon vapors

Changes to the 2004 edition of NFPA 36 include:

Better correlation with NFPA 30: Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code regarding transfer of liquids Clarification of effluent handling under emergency conditions An exception to allow installation of an automatic pressure control valve in the extractor vent line Addition of iso-hexane as a recognized solvent for the extraction process, including physical property data Format and editorial changes that improve readability and facilitate easier referencing
